3 Expert Ways In Which Color and Pattern Can Transform Your Home
Did you know that you feel color rather than think it? Color is perceived before you have time to process it at a cognitive level. Since color draws the eye, it is a great way to bring attention to the features that we want to emphasize and away from less favorite areas.
I love helping my clients with color selection and its placement. It is very rewarding to totally change a space with different arrangements of color, and no two spaces are the same. While it might be tempting to look at inspiration boards to choose on-trend colors for your room, the best way to select the right color is to base the color choice on the uniqueness of your room.
Even if you live in a house that shares a floor plan or features with other homes in your neighborhood, your home is different because it is yours. It reflects who you are and fits your lifestyle and personality.
Introducing color and pattern to your space creates a home that reflects you. If you think you will want to sell your home someday, there are ways to introduce color and pattern so that you do not have to make a huge investment to get your home ready to sell. 1. Use Colors to Create Your Vibe
Cooler colors like blue and green are well-liked by most men and women. They are associated with nature, the outdoors, tranquility, and relaxation. When designing a room to withstand the test of time, choose a grounding neutral. By using a grounding neutral, you can add accent colors (like greens and blues or other favorites) that will make a space memorable.
2. Add Patterns in Unexpected Places
After selecting a primary grounding color or a memory tone for a room, adding accents is a lot of fun. Sometimes we can add pops of color in unexpected spaces like the back of shelves, the ceiling, or a door. We can also add pattern and color with accessories like art, pillows, throws, rugs, and botanicals. These are all ways to add personality and to make a room truly yours.
3. Combine Colors & Patterns for a Cohesive Home
Part of the design process is making sure that these colors and patterns play well together. Knowing how to sprinkle an accent shade throughout a home helps create a feeling of flow and cohesiveness. For example, use the color on the back of the front door on a rug, pillows, or the ceiling (oh my!).
When assisting my clients during a color consultation, we use my extra-large color samples, placing them on different walls to see how lighting and placement affect the color. I also make sure to observe the colors against the permanent surfaces in the space (like a fireplace surround or flooring) to ensure that all the undertones work well together.
I can also help you with selecting flooring, wallpaper, custom drapery, and other accessories. Pulling a room or a whole home together to reflect your personality and lifestyle can be loads of fun!
