When the owners of a historic home in Jacksonville’s charming Springfield neighborhood asked us to reimagine their long-term rental into a boutique vacation experience, we were thrilled to take the lead. They entrusted Peace of Mind Design with full creative direction—from layout to final install—and we were ready to bring their vision to life.
Now launched as River & Oak, this two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath retreat reflects everything we love: natural textures, custom art, local flair, and thoughtful features designed to enhance both comfort and ROI.
Designed for Comfort, Flexibility, and ROI
At the heart of the design was a desire to create a warm, welcoming space that could accommodate groups, support longer stays, and photograph beautifully (because let’s be real—great listing photos = bookings).
A deep green velvet sleeper sofa expands the sleeping capacity to six. The dining room seats six around a stylish mid-century oval table, offering guests an inviting spot for dinner parties, game nights, or family meals.
Off the kitchen, we added a fully stocked bar area—complete with cocktail tools, glassware, and shelving—so guests can wind down in style. Details like these make a space feel elevated and intentional, which is exactly what short-term rental guests remember (and rave about in reviews).
Multi-Purpose Bedrooms with Built-In Functionality
Each bedroom was designed to offer more than just a good night’s sleep. We added dedicated desks to both rooms—dual-purpose zones that serve as workspaces during the day and vanity stations as needed. Perfect for digital nomads, busy parents, or couples getting ready at the same time.

The River Breeze Room pulls in soft blues, corals, and pinks—mimicking a Florida sunset. The bathroom continues the palette for a cohesive, spa-like experience.
The Spanish Moss Suite features earthy greens and warm terracotta tones, with layered textures that reflect the oak trees and mossy charm of the region. The desk here feels especially luxe, styled with natural wood and brass accents.
Living Room with Soul (and Serious Style)
We let the home’s architectural details shine—most notably, those beautiful exposed brick walls—and added mid-century furnishings, cozy textures, and smart storage throughout. A coral-toned bench doubles as a coffee table, and blue accent chairs bring balance to the green velvet sofa.
Design can add fun to the experience! Near the entryway, we placed an antique wooden bench as a coat drop zone—and hung an interactive tic-tac-toe art piece that adds a little surprise and delight for guests.
Art That Tells a Story
The true showstoppers? Two custom murals hand-painted in collaboration with Heart Space Art. One anchors the living room and the other sets the tone in the Spanish Moss Suite.
Inspired by Jacksonville’s landscape, the murals feature sweeping trees, river scenes, and the graceful blue heron, bringing the Saint Johns River and its ecosystem right into the heart of the home. These murals are more than beautiful—they’re story-driven design features that connect emotionally with guests.
